Dimensions of Gender
Mandating LGBTQIA+ Continuing Education Requirements for All Healthcare Providers
Very new research is indicating that LGBTQIA+ youth, nicknamed Generation Z (Gen Z), those born from the mid-to-late1990's to the early 2010's, are increasingly identifying as non-heterosexual and non-cisgender. Research also indicates that healthcare provider's education surrounding LGBTQIA+ patients, including Gen Z, is severely lacking and can cause poor medical outcomes. To address these concerns, the Washington D.C. City Council passed legislation, called the LGBTQ Cultural Competency Continuing Education Amendment Act of 2016. This legislation states that any health occupation licensed, registered, or certified must now include 2 hours of specialized clinical training focusing on patients, who identify as LGBTQIA+ or question their sexual orientation or gender identity and expression. This legislation is the first of its kind in the United States. This workshop will introduce the Amendment Act from the DC City Council, provide my research findings about the benefits of adding these requirements for health care providers, and discuss how California can be the first state to adopt similar legislation requirements.

More Than Sexuality or Gender
OCD in LGBTQIA+ Youth; a look at the differences between obsessive compulsive disorder, rumination, and healthy identity questioning and formation
Any LGBTQIA+ identity, where one feels different, or worse, unaccepted, is at significant risk for mental health concerns. But those concerns don't only apply to anxiety and depression. Research also indicates that obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms can be prevalent in LGBTQIA+ youth. This presentation is not to pathologize LGBTQIA+ youth and adults with OCD. Rather, we will highlight what OCD is, understand different subsets of OCD, i.e. SO-OCD (sexual orientation OCD) and gender OCD, how it may present in clients, and how to differentiate between obsessive compulsive disorder, obsessive compulsive rumination, and healthy identity formation.
